Technological gadgets and women issues are just beginning to
converge. In the past, if you wanted
almost anything technological, you had one choice – black, functional but not
visually appealing, and probably sized for the average guy. However, these days, functionality is still
very important, but designers are realizing that it needs to be more than just functional
– it has to bond with the user. And
according to CNET, approximately 46% of these "users" are women!
I, for one, am glad that there are more designs that cater
to women in the marketplace. As an
example, I consider myself to be a very rational and technical-minded
woman. I’ve got an engineering degree
and love Calculus. I work in a
manufacturing plant fixing and redesigning machines all day. I know what almost all of the buttons on my
calculator are for. But at the same
time, I own a pink cell phone (that I paid extra to make pink) and I shop at
the store that makes the fashionable steel toe shoes. Does that make me less of a geek? No, but it does make me feel more like a
woman when I am surrounded by my 75% male workforce all day long. And that’s a good thing!
My advice: functionality is always a must, so look for that first. But style and that “I love it!” appeal will brighten up your day. Every time I look at my pink phone, I smile, and that, in the end, is what it is really about.
